THE EMPIRE
The History of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., the first intercollegiate Greek-letter Organization established for African American college students, was founded at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York on December 4, 1906. Alpha Phi Alpha was born out of the desire for maintaining close association and unified support for members of this small minority group, in as much as they were denied, for the most part, the mutual helpfulness which the majority of the students attending their university regularly enjoyed. The seven visionary founders at Cornell, Henry A. Callis, Charles H. Chapman, Eugene K. Jones, George B. Kelley, Nathaniel A. Murray, Robert H. Ogle, and Vertner W. Tandy, labored in the years of severe economic struggle and racial conflict in the United States. Despite their difficulties of life, the early pioneers succeeded in laying a firm foundation and remained steadfast in their goals pointing towards the development of the Fraternity’s membership-which are the espousing of the principles of good character, sound scholarship, fellowship, and the uplifting of humanity especially the struggling African American population around the world.
Chapter History
DE Chapter Founders
The Delta Epsilon chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. was chartered at the University of Buffalo on Saturday April 23, 1949 by seven initiatives. The chapter quickly developed into one of the most dynamic chapters of the fraternity. The activities of the chapter called attention to it, and allowed Delta Epsilon the opportunity to serve as a host of the 50th Anniversary General Convention held at Statler Towers. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr; one of our most prolific brothers, was the guest speaker at the banquet. When the university of Buffalo became a member of the SUNY system, all Greek Letter Organizations were banned. The chapter did not halt, during this time a few men were initiated through the Rho Lambda Chapter. The Chapter was reactivated in the Spring of 1979. The chapter is now seated at the University of Buffalo, Buffalo State College, and Canisius College. Student Leadership and community service are personified by members of Delta Epsilon. We the brothers of the Delta Epsilon chapter shall continue to aggressively strive to maintain the standards set by the past brothers of the chapter.
